Arrival - 2016
Directed by - Denis Villeneuve
Arrival is smart, serious and diligently crafted movie which should be considered as an art, even though it is a science fiction film, dealing with strange aliens. It might be the director's one of the top ranked work, Denis Villeneuve who gave us many exceptional movies before like, Prisoners, Sicario, Incendies, Enemy, and in future goes on to direct sequel to Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic Blade Runner and David Lynch's Dune. These are sharp movies, and by sharp I mean, these movies have been crafted and put onto the screen as the the makers created them in their own imagination.
It is more than a science fiction which deals with many puissant and heavy subjects and at the same time maintains the underlying gentle, warm and humanistic tone. It is mostly comes from Amy Adams performance, which is affectionate and subtle. The film's score by Jóhann Jóhannsson also adds to the overall dimension of scope and reach. The score is impressive, which creates great air of tension, and also provide emotional composition using "On nature of Daylight".
Amy Adams' character Dr. Louise Banks is a linguistic expert, called for help by colonel Weber played by Forest Whitaker, when pod-like alien ships land on 12 differents spots on the earth. She is companion with Ian Donnelly, a physicist, played by Jeremy Renner, to find out what they want. And to communicate with them and to figure out what they mean. And Louise is the expert here, they visit the spaceship with her. And interact with them. Thats simply the plot.
The film offers intense moments of apprehension of an alien contact. With equally frightening music and sound editing. The first contact with these outer beings is one of the most intense and impressive moments of the movie. We share the same terror of the characters of how they might look like, what they want and most importantly what they will do?
But this worldwide narrative is not important here, it is the story of Louise and from her story we explore and unfold the mystery of these creatures and also that of the life and of the universe. The movie deals with the complex concepts of grief, time, language and communication. Which language we speak defines how we perceive things around us, even time. And Louise also struggles around these concepts and finds something greater, something more edifying, which will result in much more important than herself.
